Metal paint and steel paint here range from a simple one-coat spray to a full primer-and-topcoat system, and the right choice depends on what the steel needs to survive. Direct-to-metal paints like Axalta's C12 and Lakeland's Full Gloss go straight onto bare or lightly rusted steel in one coat, while the 2K epoxy primers and polyurethane topcoats build a proper multi-coat system for structural steel that needs to last years outdoors under real weathering.
Direct-to-metal (DTM) paint, like the Axalta C12, Lakeland Full Gloss and ACV90 Viterlac aerosols here, is built to go on in a single coat without a separate primer, which makes it the quicker and cheaper option for railings, gates, brackets and other steel that isn't under heavy structural or weathering demands. A full primer-and-topcoat system costs more in time and product, but for steel that needs serious long-term protection, exposed structural steelwork, tanks, heavy machinery, it outperforms any single-coat product, because the primer's job (adhesion and corrosion resistance) and the topcoat's job (UV and abrasion resistance) are genuinely different tasks that one coat can't do as well together.
The 2K products here, the PLV polyurethane high gloss and PLS semi gloss topcoats, the SPF high build epoxy primer, and the Lakeland 1K epoxy primer, are mixed shortly before use rather than applied straight from the tin, and they cure into a far harder, more chemical- and weather-resistant finish than a standard one-pack paint. That extra durability comes with a shorter working window once mixed and a more exacting application process, so they suit planned, larger-scale steel painting jobs rather than a quick touch-up.
Steel paint isn't interchangeable across every steel surface, either. Standard paint doesn't bond well to galvanised steel because the zinc coating resists adhesion, so Viterlac 305 Vinyl One Coat is formulated specifically to key onto galvanising as well as bare steelwork, using an ordinary metal paint there risks early peeling. HBV Chlorinated Rubber is an intermediate coat rather than a finish, meant to sit between a primer and topcoat in a full system rather than being used alone. And Lakeland's ARCFORCE anti-rust chassis paint and the tractor and machinery enamel are formulated for the specific stresses of vehicle undersides and agricultural equipment, constant vibration, stone chips, oil exposure, rather than for static structural steel.
